Although the romantic aspect is a huge facet to the genre, most danmei works do not focus solely on the romantic/sexual dynamic between main pairing, but instead places its characters within a world rich with plot, complex characters, and societal issues that strive to explore a myriad of themes beyond male-male romance. Oftentimes, the romance in danmei novels is slow-burn and acts as a secondary element to the main plot, instead of dominating the narrative in ways that can come across as unrealistic and overly-romantisized as often seen in mainstream MM romance.
